Accreditation is a must for restaurant and hospitality programs. While accreditation of restaurant programs isn't required, accredited status gives students reassurance that they are receiving an education that's been evaluated and approved by restaurant and hospitality professionals. This status makes the education valuable to the restaurant and hospitality industry, which, in turn, increases post-graduation employment odds.
The Accreditation Commission for Programs in Hospitality Administration (ACPHA) is the premier accrediting body for restaurant and hospitality programs. The ACPHA consists of 14 Commissioners, some of them being restaurant and hospitality industry educators and executives, that meet bi-annually to evaluate and approve restaurant and hospitality programs.
Six regional bodies accredit restaurant and hospitality programs as well:
- Middle State Association of Colleges and Schools
- New England Association of Schools and Colleges
- Southern Association of Colleges and Schools
- Western Association of Schools and Colleges
- Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges
- North Central Association of Colleges and Schools
Resources related to restaurant education accreditation include:
- American Culinary Federation
- Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business
- International Council on Hotel, Restaurant, and Institutional Education (CHRIE)
- National Restaurant Association
